Commemoration for Absolom Jones: Black History Month

February 8th, 2024 | Posted by admin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Commemoration for Absolom Jones: Black History Month)

Absalom Jones was an earnest preacher. He denounced slavery and warned the oppressors to “clean their hands of slaves.” To him, God was the Father, who always acted on “behalf of the oppressed and distressed.” But it was his constant visiting and mild manner that made him beloved by his congregation and by the community. St. Thomas Church grew to over 500 members during its first year. The congregants formed a day school and were active in moral uplift, self-empowerment, and anti-slavery activities. Known as “the Black Bishop of the Episcopal Church,” Jones was an example of persistent faith in God and in the Church as God’s instrument. Jones died on February 13, 1818.

The Absalom Jones Service has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 7 at 4 p.m. at St. Cyprian’s Church in Roxbury. Bishop Alan M. Gates will preside, and the Rev. James Hairston will preach. Questions may be directed to the Rev. Canon Jean Baptiste Ntagengwa, Canon for Immigration and Multicultural Ministries (jbntagengwa@diomass.org or 617-482-4826, ext. 400).

Lent 2024 ~ Our Lenten Theme

February 8th, 2024 | Posted by admin in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on Lent 2024 ~ Our Lenten Theme)

Our Lenten theme comes from the book, Feasting On the Word, by David L. Bartlett, Barbara Brown Taylor, and Kimberly Bracken Long. Lent can be a difficult discipline for many worshipers, with its intentional solemnity and encouragement toward self-denial. Others find it to be the most meaningful time of the year and the most honest time of the year, when we wrestle with the hard things of life and walk with Jesus through the darkest days of his life.

We will be exploring themes of food and fasting for Ash Wednesday, although people will be coming to church looking for discipline, as we face the challenges in juxtapositions of mortality and eternity, sin and grace, death and life, all of which make the path to Jesus’ cross and tomb a rugged, rewarding campaign.

  1. Please bring along your old palm branches and crosses on Sunday, February 11th,  so that they can be burnt for the ashes for Ash Wednesday February 14.
  2. Services for Ash Wednesday
    1. – Imposition of ashes without Holy Communion at 7 AM                                                  – Pancakes in the church hall at 5.30 PM with a “Shrove Tuesday” program PLEASE BRING YOUR CHILDREN! Volunteers needed. Please see Fr. Noble

2. – Holy Eucharist with the imposition of ashes in the church at 6 PM
